✓ Men’s, Women’s & Kids’ ✓ US, UK, EU, CM, JP ✓ How to Measure Length ✓ Half Size Guide

Shoe sizes vary between countries, brands, and even shoe types. A US men’s 10 is a UK 9, a EU 44, and 28cm in Japanese sizing. Women’s and men’s sizes are offset by approximately 1.5 sizes. And children’s sizes follow an entirely different scale before transitioning to adult sizing at youth 7.

This page gives you every conversion you need — all in one place.

Size vs Width — two different measurements

Shoe size (the number) corresponds to foot length. Shoe width (the letter) corresponds to foot width. This page covers length sizing. For width, use our Men’s Width Chart, Women’s Width Chart, or Kids’ Width Chart. Both measurements matter — getting only one right still results in an ill-fitting shoe.

How to Measure Your Foot Length

1

Stand on a piece of paper on a hard floor. Bear your full weight — foot length increases slightly under load.

2

Mark the heel and the tip of your longest toe. Your longest toe may be your second toe, not your big toe — mark whichever extends furthest.

3

Measure the distance between the two marks in centimeters or inches. This is your foot length.

4

Measure both feet. Use the longer measurement. One foot is often slightly longer than the other.

5

Find your size in the chart above. If your measurement falls between two sizes, choose the larger size. Add 0.5–1cm of toe room when buying closed-toe shoes.

Don’t forget width

Foot length gives you your shoe size number. Foot width gives you your width designation (B, D, E, 2E, etc.). Both matter equally. Many foot problems blamed on “wrong size” are actually wrong width. After measuring length, measure width using our How to Measure Foot Width guide.

Between Sizes? What to Do

If your foot measures exactly between two sizes, here is how to decide:

For most closed-toe shoes — athletic, dress, work boots — go up to the larger size. You need a small amount of length room for your toes to function naturally when walking, and for the natural foot elongation that occurs when your weight shifts forward with each stride. A shoe that fits exactly to your foot length with no extra room will feel tight and cause toenail bruising over time.

For sandals and open-toe shoes, you can go with your exact measurement or even the smaller size, since there is no enclosed toe box to cause pressure.

For athletic and running shoes specifically, many experienced runners recommend going up a half size from your measured foot length — not because the foot is longer, but because running foot strike causes the foot to spread forward and sideways, and a small amount of extra length room prevents the toenail damage common in too-short running shoes.

Men’s to Women’s Size Conversion

Men’s and women’s shoe sizes are offset by approximately 1.5 sizes on the US scale — a women’s 8.5 is roughly the same foot length as a men’s 7. This matters when shopping unisex styles or buying shoes from a brand that uses men’s sizing for all genders.

Width changes with gender conversion

When converting between men’s and women’s sizes, remember that width codes also shift. A women’s D is wide — the same as a men’s E. A women’s B (standard) is equivalent to a men’s B (narrow). If you’re buying unisex shoes, check which gender’s sizing standard the shoe is built to before ordering. See our Width Codes Explained page for the full comparison.

Size is Only Half the Picture

Now that you know your shoe size, make sure you also know your width. More foot pain and discomfort is caused by wrong width than wrong length.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between US and UK shoe sizes?

US and UK shoe sizes differ by approximately half a size to one full size. For men, UK sizes are typically 0.5 smaller than US sizes — a US 10 is a UK 9.5. For women, UK sizes are approximately 2 sizes smaller — a US 8 is a UK 6. Width codes also differ between US and UK systems — UK E is the men’s standard, not a wide width as it is in the US. Always check both the size and width conversion when buying across US/UK systems.

What EU size is a US men’s 10?

A US men’s 10 is approximately EU 44. EU sizing is based on the Paris Point system where each size increment equals 6.67mm of foot length. EU sizes are the same for men and women — the gender difference is only in US and UK sizing systems. EU 44 corresponds to approximately 28cm of foot length.

How do I convert my shoe size to centimeters?

The CM column in the charts above gives you your foot length in centimeters for each US size. Alternatively, measure your foot directly in centimeters using the method described on this page. Japanese shoe sizing uses foot length in centimeters directly — JP 27.0 means a foot length of 27.0cm, equivalent to US men’s 9 or US women’s 10.5.

Should I size up or down if I’m between sizes?

Size up for closed-toe shoes. Your foot needs a small amount of length room — approximately 3/8 to 1/2 inch (about 1cm) — beyond your longest toe. Buying to your exact foot length with no extra room causes toenail bruising, especially during activities where the foot slides forward. Size down only for open-toe sandals where there is no enclosed toe box.

Do shoe sizes vary between brands?

Yes — shoe sizes are not perfectly standardized across brands, and a size 10 from one brand may fit differently than a size 10 from another. This is especially true for athletic brands, which build on proprietary lasts that vary in shape, volume, and fit characteristics. The CM measurement is the most consistent guide when buying from a new brand — if the brand publishes a size-to-CM conversion, compare it to your actual foot measurement rather than assuming their size 10 is the same as your usual size 10.
